UPDATE ON THE TSUNAMI
FOR THE HAI NETWORK IN ASIA/PACIFIC

January 6-9 YEL/HelpAge Indonesia has visited Northern Sumatra
and reached the border with Aceh. At this time we were advised not
to go any further yet. In discussions with local authorities and
preliminary evaluation of the situation the
Island of NIAS has
been identified as a starting point for the YEL/Help Age-Indonesia
relief program.

will visit the
Island of NIAS for a
Need Assessment/Evaluation January 18-22, 2005.

During their January 6-9 observation
visit to the Tsunami disaster area,
Help Age Indonesia/YEL identified
the Island of Nias as a work area
for their relief program.
A HelpAge Indonesia/YEL Team,
in cooperation with the Ministries
of Social Affairs and Health,
and HelpAge International,
visited Nias for a specific
Needs Assessment on January 18-22.

Areas surveyed were
Sirombu, Madrehe, Lahewa
and Afulu.
Most damage and casualties
occurred in Madrehe.

EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI VICTIMS, NIAS ISLAND

HelpAge Indonesia/YEL
in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs,
Indonesian Ministry of Health and Help Age International visited
Nias Island, January 18-22, 2005 for a Needs Assessment.

This report is dedicated to
our dear friend
Alain Pillet
who died January 20th , 2005,
during this humanitarian mission
on the road to Lahewa from
Afulu, Nias Island.
He left a wife and a daughter in France

 

With deep sadness
we announce the sudden death in Nias of
Help Age International Team member
Alain Pillet.
Thursday January 20, 2005

Alan Pillet died of a heart attack just after completion of
the humanitarian Need Assessment mission in tsunami
ravaged Nias, sponsored by HelpAge International and YEL
(Yayasan Emong Lansia)/HelpAge Indonesia, in which
he actively participated.
